What is your Why Contest

I was pumped when I saw an advertisement in the paper for a contest to win tickets to Simon Sinek’s upcominthe-golden-circleg Start with Why presentation March 18, 2013 at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo, plus dinner for two at ACME Food Co and Simon’s book!

From the Contest Details: Simon Sinek is leading a movement to build a world in which the vast majority of us are inspired by the work we do. His book, “Start with Why” explains anyone can say what they do; some can explain how they are different or better; but few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not about money or profit — those are results. WHY is the thing that inspires us & inspires those around us. What is giving YOU the strength that gest you past the many torpedoes that come your way in business?

The winner of the contest will be announced in the Nanaimo Daily News on March 15, 2013 but I thought I would share our WHY here, and given that this is our first blog post, I only think it’s appropriate that we start with why.

WHY is where it all started. My business partner, Laurel Sliskovic and I wanted to share with others our passion for life through leisure and sustainability. Simply put, we want to live our best lives and help others do the same. We believe leisure can change the world; that by putting leisure at the forefront of people’s lives, we can foster a better society, economy, and environment where we live, work, and play. As young, creative, and enthusiastic residents of Vancouver Island, we wanted to ensure our skills and talents stayed on the island we love. On the eve of our graduation as the first two recipients of the Master’s of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management from Vancouver Island University, we announced the creation of The Sociable Scientists Inc. to our family, friends, and colleagues. Now, less than two months later, our WHY is driving our business forward and will continue to be the key to our success as our company evolves. The Sociable Scientists Inc. is enhancing quality of life and sustainability through innovative leisure research. Fuelled by our passion and enthusiasm for leisure, research, innovation, and sustainability strategies, we are keen to share our knowledge, skills, and abilities with the communities we know and love.

Be sure to check out Simon’s TED talk How Great Leaders Inspire Action for a taste of ingenuity and more on the concept of WHY.

And we will be sure to keep you posted on the results of the contest!

Fingers and toes crossed!
